Periodontal diseases are mainly the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In an other term we call it periodontitis. In its early stage, "called gingivitis", the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed easily when you brush or floss.
what is the cause of periodontal disease ?
The main cause of periodontal disease is the plaque /biofilm that sitting and accumulating around the gum line and get hard and calcified by saliva which in this stage called tartar or calculus.
Is periodontitis preventable?
As mentioned above the early stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis which is preventable by having a good routine oral hygiene ( 2x/brushing for 2 minutes with soft bristle toothbrush and fluorided toothpaste, and flossing at least 1x/day) , and visiting your hygienist and dentist every 6 months to get clean under and around the gum line and get check up. If you don't respect this routine and plaque-tarter accumulate around and under the gum line with the time the inflammation and infection will go further and causes significant damage such as tooth loss
